Willie Pete

Willie Peter or white phosphorus was used by US forces in Viet Nam. It’s horrible stuff that does horrible things to people who are hit with grenades, bombs and shells filled with it.  It will burn under water.  White phosphorus weapons were also used by the US Marines in Fallujah this summer; a fact that I found riddled with the worm of hypocrisy since white phosphorus weapons had been listed among the “chemical weapons” alleged to be in the possession of Saddam Hussein and thus necessitating the attack against Iraq.

Perhaps I’m unduly squeamish, but I’m not ashamed to feel repelled by the use of such weapons and particularly in areas where the civilian population will probably suffer the consequences. It’s another circumstance where “victory” may not be a victory when the means to it are fully considered.  The Geneva Conventions ban using white phosphorous against civilians or civilian areas and there are groups, such as the Red Cross who have vocally opposed it.

And so I have to feel equally as repelled by the admission that the Israeli military used white phosphorous bombs as well as cluster bombs against Hizbullah guerillas hidden amongst Lebanese civilians in August of this year.  Even though Hizbullah and similar vermin have never had the slightest scruple about specifically targeting civilians or specifically sacrificing the women and children of their host (or hostage) countries, I have to decry the use of any weapon that, like cluster bombs, go on killing for months and years after hostilities stop or like phosphorous, compared to which death by any other means would be preferable. I have to oppose it as much as I oppose suicide bombers and improvised bombs that kill, not just indiscriminately, but kill children and women and the elderly specifically.

First of all it's not against international law to use white phosphorus against military targets and I've yet to hear that Israel admitted to doing that. Secondly, it wouldn't matter if Israel dropped pllows on Lebanon they would have been decried as murderers simply for not wanting to be murdered themselves. I have sympathy for the innocent kids and civilians who are caught in the crossfire of war but the difference is Israel tries to minimize civilian casualities at all costs since even one death of a civilian at the hands of Israelis is labeled a massacre by the world. The Israelis value the lives of their enemies and their enemies' families more than they do.

I know it's not against international law, not that Bush chooses to credit international law, but many people think it ought to be and that includes people who have seen this stuff used.

The problem with fighting Hizbullah, is that it's difficult to define what is a military target and what is not. Tha't's the game they play.

My point has nothing to do with how bad the bad guys are, but what a bad choice Israel made in using something that could so easily be seen as an atrocity and that wasn't effective anyway. They made the same mistake the US has made in assuming that you can root out entrenched partisans, hidden in civilian areas by flying over with bombs and by dropping artillery shells from a distance without enormous civilian casualties. As we have done in Iraq, Israel may have made more enemies than it had beforehand, whether or not that's "fair." Unless you're willing to destroy a city, urban warfare can't be effective without ground troops.

My minor point was that the US defines these as illegal chemical weapons or ordinary military weapons as the US sees fit. They're not WMD if we have them - they were when we said that Saddam had them even though he didn't.

Everything Israel does is seen as ana atrocity. If anything they've been too cautious dealing with the bloodthristy killers who surround them. Don't ask me just ask the Israeli peace or leftist groups. They either no longer exist or want to build two walls, a dome and a moat filled with flames and crocodiles to keep these merciless killers from getting in to Israel.

So by that logic, if they think you're a theif, you might as well use that as an excuse to steal? If they think you're a killer, you might as well kill someone?
